‎Canary Smart Home Security on the App Store

This was another sticking point last time, and an even more aggravating one, as I couldn't get the download to work despite repeated attempts and multiple phone calls to Canary's support team. All told, it took a solid day of fiddling before I had Canary up and running. That second step was my first roadblock last time around. You plug Canary into your phone using a yellow cable that plugs into your headphone jack. From there, Canary will "listen" for the Wi-Fi info you enter into the app.

So this seems an unnecessary complication that’s compounded by needing the cable for any subsequent changes to the Wi-Fi network, even if Canary is already connected. The image below shows the audio activation step. Once your location is set, the Canary app asks if you want to connect by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. I chose to go with Wi-Fi and here’s where it gets weird.

Video and Image Quality

I know what the changes include and don't include but now that the new business model is to eliminate previous subscription-free options these products are no longer worth it. I'm swapping my two canary cameras for a better option. The company's response doesn't appear to actually understand the frustration. On a positive note, the user interface is one of the simplest ones I’ve seen and works well. But it suffers from the lack of motion detection features you see in most non cloud-based IP cameras. This isn’t a UI problem, but a limitation of Canary’s record-only-on-motion approach.

Glitches and quirks aside, my main issue with Canary is that I don't know if the DIY security that it offers will be robust enough for everyone. Unlike Piper, which includes a built-in Z-Wave radio, there's no way for Canary to interface directly with third-party devices, like smart locks or smart lights. I asked Canary CEO Adam Sager about this a while back, and he explained that the goal was for Canary to be as simple and accessible as possible. I can understand that, but passing on the opportunity to interface with lights and locks seems like a big missed opportunity to me.

Arlo is a 720p camera, and Canary is a 1080p camera, so the extra bandwidth does make sense. But 1.5 Mbps could be a signifcant burden on or even exceed your total uplink bandwidth, depending on your internet connection. As with Arlo and Dropcam, there are no controls to limit bandwidth use. One particular thing to take note of here is really just how wide Canary field of view is (147°). You really see quite a lot of real estate wherever you have Canary pointed. Our test floor has no windows and gets pitch black at night, but Canary's night-vision camera still offered outstanding detail in the dark.

Missing features aside, I forged ahead, eager to try out Canary's core functionality. The first step was to get the thing up and running. To get started, you'll register an email address in Canary's app, then connect your account with the device itself.

Night Vision

That last bit is key, as the most crucial video this thing will ever record is the clip of a burglar rummaging through your living room in the dark of the night. If you get their face on camera, you're going to want that image to be as clear as possible. Once it had burned down, I went back inside and checked the graphs. Along with the expected jumps in temperature and humidity, there was a big red spike into "very abnormal" territory on the air quality graph. You can also tap on the home screen's temperature and humidity readings to access "Homehealth" graphs of the conditions in your home. Testing them out at the office, they offered spot-on readings of the temperature and humidity.

The other benefits that homeowners get to enjoy are the convenience, remote access, savings, and peace of mind. A few home automation systems have become much more accessible and advanced, so homeowners across the country are upgrading their homes. Now you can begin using your Canary home security system. Canary is an interesting product, still in its early days, with many features on the "to-do" list.

However, as I look at products like NETGEAR’s Arlo , Nest Cam and others, I tend to wonder if people know what they are missing. I also tested the third Homehealth graph, which records air quality. I paid for a camera that was advertised as and gave me the ability to see recorded videos on my timeline but now I hear that is no longer an option and I have to pay extra for that. Thats really messed up and looks like false advertising to me because its worthless without that capability. Its like I buy a car and then they say, ooops you only get 3 tires. Considering what my options are because this is not acceptable.
